Disability Sports Australia (DSA) would like to announce the formal resignation of CEO Murray Elbourn.

Elbourn was appointed as CEO in November 2020. During his tenure, he enabled the organisation to achieve significant change overseeing the transition of wheelchair rugby from a DSA division to become its own organisation, Wheelchair Rugby Australia. Elbourn also oversaw the return of a new look Toyota Wheelchair AFL National Championship delivered last year. The tournament featured every state and territory for the first time.

Under Elbourn's leadership the organisation connected sport, education, health and government sectors through the creation of new programs. This included the National Referral Hub, Activate Inclusion Sports Days in addition to the development of Accessibility Champion, a free course developed in partnership with the Australian Sports Commission, designed to help grassroots sporting clubs start their accessibility journey.

Elbourn said, “I’ve had a wonderful team of dedicated people to support and implement my vision for what Disability Sports Australia should be as a connector, advocate and central entry point to increase participation from grass roots, clubs and into pathways. I would like to thank the DSA Board, including previous chairs John Croll AM and Steve Loader, our staff members and the organisations' members, partners and stakeholders, who shared in DSA’s vision to enable more Australians with a disability to be more active, more often”.

Elbourn also served as the initial DSA representative on the Australian Sporting Alliance for People with Disability and worked in close partnership with the Australian Sports Commission.

DSA continues to change lives through sport and create more choice and opportunity for people with a disability through the sector.

Dr Phil Hamdorf who succeeds Steve Loader as Chair of DSA, will assume an interim role as Executive Chair.

The outgoing Chair of DSA said, “Murray has been an advocate in the disability sports space and for the organisation since becoming CEO, and has been successful in creating new programs”.
