Australian Athletes with a Disability is responsible for the administration of:

All three organisations are responsible for the development of sport for athletes with a disability and administer, promote and coordinate sporting opportunities. Each of the three organisations has State and Territory organisations as members.

The AAWD Board consists of five members who meet at least quarterly and are supplemented by audit, remuneration, compliance and nomination committees.

The main duties of Australian Athletes with a Disability are:

  • Promote the integration of sports for athletes with a disability into National Sports Organisations (NSOs);
  • Administer national level competition for specific sports (including wheelchair rugby, wheelchair basketball and lawn bowls) collaboratively with NSOs;
  • Collaborate with the ASC, APC and NSOs to create increasing opportunities for athletes with a disability;
  • Liaise with other national bodies with similar objectives to increase opportunities for sporting activities for athletes with a disability;
  • Provide information and support for members;
  • Promote efficient administration of the industry;
  • Monitor strategic industry issues, trends and direction;
  • Support member organisations to engage the community in the development of healthy activities for people with a disability, and encourage and support participation from grass roots to international level in both Paralympic and non-Paralympic sport;
  • Support member organisations to provide opportunities for officials, coaches and classifiers to develop their skills;
  • Act as an advocate for people with a disability;
  • Liaise with international bodies including IWAS, CPISRA, IWBF, and IWRF.
