Boccia
Boccia National Championships
Cerebral Palsy Boccia Australia held a very successful 2009 national titles hosted by NSW Boccia at Sydney Academy of Sport, Narrabeen May 4-7 and officially opened by The Hon. Kevin Greene, NSW Minister for Sport & Recreation. Thirty-five players from Qld, NSW, ACT, Vic, Tas & NZ again raised the standard of the competition. Over a hundred Community Service students at Northern Beaches College of TAFE volunteered to organise and co-ordinate the event and brought an enthusiasm never previously experienced at the competition. One player commented: “The event was electric”.
The students surveyed the 35 athletes on how playing boccia helped them and the most common answers were - boccia widened horizons in being able to represent state and country; competing gives a purpose to succeed; boccia has helped me associate with others and be happier; lives have changed for the better because of boccia; team spirit formed; gained confidence and increased self esteem. While the games were playing the TAFE students helped visiting schools to ‘come & try games’ and hopefully more players will be hooked and we’ll see new faces in the future.
Queensland with most points won the coveted National Shield.
Congratulations to the following players chosen to represent Australia at the 3rd Asia & South Pacific Boccia Champions in August with a total of 12 countries/territories competing:- Qld: Fiona Lyons, Lachlan Kavanagh; ACT: Corena Sheridan; NSW: Barry Fear, Ange McReynolds, Cally Simpson; Vic: Gavin Thorneycroft, John Richardson.
