Funding Grants

The next round of funding grants will open in August 2009. Further information and

Wheelchair Sports Australia

The 2009 Wheelchair Sports Australia AGM and related meetings will be held in Melbourne in conjunction with the Australian Paralympic Youth Games being held 5-10 October, 2009. Further information will be made available to member organisations closer to the event.

NSW Sports Awards

Wheelchair Sports NSW was awarded “2008 NSW Sports Organisation of the Year” at the NSW Sports Federation Annual Sports Awards against strong competition from Football NSW, Netball NSW and Surf Life Saving NSW. An awards ceremony was held on 26 February 2009 at the Waterview Convention Centre in Bicentennial Park, Sydney Olympic Park. In addition, wheelchair rugby player, Ryley Batt, won “Team Athlete of the Year with a Disability” and the NSW Wheelchair Rugby Team won “Team of the Year with a Disability.” AAWD congratulates all of the award winners.

Australian Paralympic Youth Games A correction to the January-February 2009 newsletter – this event was incorrectly referred to as the “APC Youth Games.” The event is in fact called the “Australian Paralympic Youth Games.” The program length has been shortened and the confirmed dates are now 5-10 October 2009.

Wheelchair Basketball

WNWBL and NWBL

The first round of the 2009 WNWBL kicks off on 1-3 May in Perth with the second round in Melbourne on 12-14 June. The first round of the NWBL is on 30-31 May at various venues.

Boccia

Boccia National Championships

The Boccia National Championships are being held on May 4-7 2009 at Sydney Academy of Sport, Narrabeen from 9.30am each day with special guests from the NSW Waratahs attending on Tuesday 5 May and Manly Sea Eagles on Wednesday 6 May. Athletes are vying for Australian team selection for the 2009 East Asian Games to be held in Hong Kong, and the 2012 London Paralympic Games.

The Australian Paralympic Football Team will be participating in the Arafura Games for the first time. The Games are being held on 9-17 May 2009.

Australian Paralympic Youth Games Football Team

Football will be making its first appearance at the Australian Paralympic Youth Games in October 2009 and the various states are working hard towards getting junior teams there. Both NSW and QLD already have sides, but it is hoped that South Australia and Victoria will have sides as well.

Para-Cycling

The Oceania Para-cycling Road Championships will be held on 13-15 May 2009, as part of the Arafura Games in Darwin. The Games will also incorporate the fifth and final round of the National Handcycling Series.

Congratulations to Jayme Paris for her selection in the Australian Team for the PWC Manchester World Cup to be held on 21-22 May, 2009.

Wheelchair Rugby

NWRL Commissioner

Congratulations to Robyn Stephensen, who was recently appointed as the Commissioner for the National Wheelchair Rugby League for 2009 and 2010. Robyn brings a wealth of experience having been involved in disability sport for ten years including a long standing involvement in wheelchair rugby and the NWRL.

Final arrangements for the NWRL are taking place with the first round due to kick off in Adelaide on 26-28 June 2009.
