Australian Athletes with a Disability

The Staff and Board of Australian Athletes with a Disability would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
The AAWD office will be closed from Wednesday 24 December 2008 and will re-open on Monday 5 January 2009. If there are any urgent inquiries during that time please call the office line and leave a message. We will get back to you as soon as possible.

ASADA Anti-Doping Policy

In accordance with a newly revised World Anti-Doping Code, AAWD and its members were required to update their anti-doping policy and implement it from 1 January 2009. AAWD will be adopting the APC’s anti-doping policy as approved by ASADA as WADA compliant, and as amended from time to time. A copy of the policy will be available from the AAWD website in the New Year.

Funding Grants

The next round of funding grants will open in February 2009. Further information and application forms will be available from the AAWD website at that time.

Wheelchair Sports Australia

Acknowledgement

Congratulations to Ray Epstein for recently being awarded Runner Up in the 2008 Equity Trustees Not For Profit CEO Awards in the Long Term Achiever Category. Currently the CEO of Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association, Epstein has lead the organisation since 1998.

APC Youth Games

Tentative dates have been scheduled for the Junior Games re-named as the APC Youth Games from 27 September to 4 October 2009 to be held in Melbourne, Victoria.
Confirmation of dates and further information will be available in the New Year.

WSA Futures Fund

Congratulations to James Leonard (Wheelchair Basketball) and Josh Hose (Wheelchair Rugby) both from Victoria who were awarded a Futures Fund Grant after being identified has having potential in their respective sports. Athletes must be nominated by their state Wheelchair Sports Australia organisation and the grants are used towards coaching expenses to encourage development in their particular sport.

Wheelchair Basketball

Congratulations goes to our Paralympic gold medal winning Rollers Men’s Wheelchair Basketball team and also to our bronze medal winning Gliders Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team.  The Roller’s result saw them take out the Team of the Year Award at the recent Paralympian of the Year Awards.

WNWBL and NWBL

The dates and hosts for the 2009 National Women’s Wheelchair Basketball League are currently being finalised.

Current NWBL Champions, the Perth Wheelcats returned from Japan after finishing 4th in the Kitakyushu Champions Cup.

Boccia

Cerebral Palsy Boccia Australia National Championships

The dates for the Cerebral Palsy Boccia Australia National Championships are May 4-8 2009 inclusive. Expressions of Interest will be available in January 2009 both online at www.boccia.com.au and by emailing bocciaaustralia@powerup.com.au. Lawn Bowls

The 2009 National Championships will be held from 22-27 June at Chermside in Brisbane, Queensland. The event will form part of selection for the Australian team to compete at the IWAS World Championships to be held in Adelaide, South Australia in September and October 2009. Further details will be available in the New Year.

Wheelchair Rugby
