Australian Athletes With a Disability

The Staff and Board of Australian Athletes with a Disability would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The AAWD office will be closed from Friday 23 December 2011 and will re-open at 9.00am Monday 9 January 2012. If there are any urgent enquiries during that time please call the office line and leave a message. We will get back to you as soon as possible.

New Streamlined Future for AAWD

AAWD is pleased to announce its new organisational structure. Following a recent review of membership, AAWD and its members agreed to amalgamate their national operations and form a combined national organisation. This decision is a momentous occasion for AAWD and its members. AAWD has now extended its membership to the members of its current members, being Australian Sports Organisation for the Disabled (ASOD), Cerebral Palsy Australian Sports and Recreation Federation (CPASRF) and Wheelchair Sports Australia (WSA). The new structure will allow for simpler corporate governance, streamlining and better use of available resources. AAWD will become one national voice for its members. The merging of traditions and operations into a single common pool of experience, awareness and purpose will also enable real progress in the evolution of sport for people with disabilities. The AAWD Board will also look to increase its number of board members to broaden its skill set and provide greater resources to support the AAWD business.

Cerebral Palsy Football 7-A-Side

2011 Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association (CPISRA) Football 7-A-Side World Championships

Over the past few months there have been major developments within the National Program. This includes a new Facebook site and a Twitter site is being created.  A new poster has also been created to promote the game around the country.

The national team is currently competing at the 2011 CPISRA World Championships in the Netherlands.  Unfortunately they will finish outside of the top seven and will miss out on 2012 Paralympics. The team has achieved several milestones for this tournament including their first ever win over Spain.  Jared Eiby and Scott Kennedy from QLD have both made their international debut.

The next National Camp is scheduled for 23– 25 September 2011 at the Sydney Academy of Sport, Narrabeen.  This camp will be used as a development camp as well for many of the junior players that have been identified throughout Australia.

Wheelchair Rugby

NWRL

Round 2 of the 2011 NWRL was held on 13-15 May in Brisbane with home team, Jetstar Gold Coast Titans Wheelchair Rugby Squad, and SA Sharks playing two spectacular matches with both games going into overtime. SA Sharks came out victorious after a period of overtime by one point. Game two was an even tougher match with the game going into three periods of over time before the SA Sharks eventually won by two points.

With the return of 2010 MVP, Ryley Batt, the GIO NSW Gladiators went through the round undefeated placing them in second spot on the ladder. Victorian ‘Coloplast’ Thunder won three of their five matches to retain top spot at the end of the weekend. A gap has started to open up between the top and bottom half of the league now so it’s all to play for in the next round.

Round 3 in NSW opened with a game between the two teams occupying first and second spot on the ladder. However, the leaders, Victorian ‘Coloplast’ Thunder, were swiftly swept aside by the dominant GIO NSW Gladiators who ended up winning 55-41.  The second game was a closer battle with Jetstar Gold Coast Titans Wheelchair Rugby Squad turning around their fortunes from the previous round to beat SA Sharks by a single point.

Going into the final day, it appeared that the GIO NSW Gladiators would continue to dominate and snatch top spot by close of play. Some fine, competitive play by the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans Wheelchair Rugby Squad saw GIO NSW Gladiators defeated 61-38 in the last game of the round. This result means Victorian ‘Coloplast’ Thunder remain in top spot but only on goal difference over GIO NSW Gladiators. Jetstar Gold Coast Titans Wheelchair Rugby Squad moves off the bottom to be replaced by SA Sharks.

Finals Round will be hosted in Adelaide on Friday 15 – Sunday 17 July at the Parks Recreation Centre, Angle Park, South Australia.
