Fearnley tests Beijing conditions

Australian wheelchair racer Kurt Fearnley has continued his strong Paralympic preparation with second place in the Good Luck Beijing Athletics Open last night.

Following on from three wins in Switzerland last week, Fearnley finished the 5000m Beijing race behind English counterpart Dave Weir. For once Fearnley was happy with second place.

"This race was all about seeing what sort of condition the other guys are in and testing out the track. My top speed wasn't quite there but I expected that as I'm in the middle of a heavy training block. I'm happy with the push and it's certainly got me excited about September" Fearnley said.

The past week has been a good learning experience for Fearnley and his Australian teammates. The weeklong visit has allowed them to see how their bodies will react to the harsh Beijing conditions and has given them a glimpse of what to expect at the games.

"We've had great weather but with the smog and dust haven't seen any blue sky. At the end of a training session the throat's a bit dry and the teeth a little dirty but it's not that bad. It's the same for everyone. We wandered around the city centre last night and it was good to soak in the culture" he said.

Fearnley also praised the new National Stadium, affectionately known as the Bird's Nest.

"The Nest is amazing and it's good to have a look around before the games. To be in awe of the place now allows me to focus when it counts. It's been a valuable trip".

Fearnley now returns to Australia to finalise his preparations for the Paralympics. With just over three months to go his mind is firmly fixed on the prize, another Paralympic gold.
