2012 NWRC Media Release

The competition is fierce with NSW GIO Gladiators, Victoria Coloplast Thunder, SA Sharks, Enforcers and Jetstar Gold Coast Titans Wheelchair Rugby Team all vying for their chance to win the 2012 National Championship title.

Reigning 2011 Champions, the NSW GIO Gladiators will be playing in front of their home crowd and intend to keep the Championship title which they have currently held for six consecutive years.

However it will be a tough National Championships for NSW GIO Gladiators, with key player Ryley Batt out with injury.  It will be a gruelling three day event with lots of clashes as the five teams battle it out to take home the crown.  This year it could be the turning of the tide as there is a fantastic line up from all the teams.

“The 2012 National Wheelchair Rugby Championships will be an impressive event that is not to be missed.  The National Championships are the culmination of all the hard work from all the players and their team members, especially those who will be representing Australia at the 2012 London Paralympic Games.” said Gillian Ting, Executive Officer AAWD.

The League Executive would also like to take this opportunity to thank the 2012 NWRC sponsors the Australian Paralympic Committee, Telstra and GIO for their support.  Due to GIO’s generous support we are privileged to be hosting the 2012 NWRC at the internationally esteemed Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre and broadcasting the National Championships.

This is a fantastic opportunity to come and support our elite athletes at this premiere location before they head off to London to compete for Australia.  Our world famous players are coming from all over the country to compete in Sydney.  The Steelers are currently ranked number two in the world and plan to bring home Gold.  The 2012 NWRC will give sports fans a close up opportunity to see the world’s best players in action before the 2012 London Paralympics.
