U25 AUSTRALIAN WOMEN’S WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL TEAM NAMED AHEAD OF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Basketball Australia is excited to announce the U25 Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team that will represent Australia at the inaugural U25 Women’s World Championship of Basketball in St Catherine, Ontario, Canada next month.

Headlining the team are experienced campaigners Cobi Crispin, Amber Merritt, Caitlin De Wit and Sarah Vinci.

The Championship will be held from 15 – 21 July, with Aussies facing off against seven of the world’s best Wheelchair Basketball nations, including the United States, Germany, Canada, South Africa, Great Britain, Japan and Mexico.

It is an exciting time for the star-studded women’s team, which boasts three athletes from the 2010 Gliders World Championship team and six athletes who are in the current Gliders squad.

Amber Merritt, who was born in England but has since become an Australiancitizen, commented on how proud she was to represent Australia.

“The places Wheelchair Basketball has taken me and the people I’ve met through the sport have really shown me how privileged and fantastic it is to represent your country,” she said. And since I got my citizenship, I can really truly call Australia my country, my home,” she said.

Australia has been pitted against United States, Great Britain and Mexico in Pool A of the competition and will play all three of these nations in the three days of preliminary round action, before the finals get underway, building up to the medal rounds, to be held on 21 July, the final day of competition.

Also representing Australia at the Championship is Basketball Australia’s own Jarrod Greedy, who was selected from the leading crop of basketball referees to head to Canada to officiate at the tournament.

The tournament, held at Brock University in St Catherine, is the first of its kind, and is not only an exciting event, but a milestone event in the ongoing growth of wheelchair basketball around the world, forging a legacy of unprecedented opportunity for young women in sport.
